Club Meetings - November, 2011
November 3rd - This was our monthly Board Meeting. Details of this meeting may be found on the Clubs blog at: http://uplandhostlions.blogspot.com/
November 17th - We did not have a program today so we spent the time talking about other Club activities.
First, and quite significant, this month we provided eye exams and glasses for 13 Upland School Students. Fortunately we have a good organization working with us and they provide the examination and new glasses for $50.00 per child. 13 exams and glasses only cost us $650.00.
Next, and also very important, we discussed the LCI tree planting program. Our newest member, Lion Wendy, alerted us to a program started in 1941 called the "Penny Pines Reforestation Program". The first Penny Pines Plantation was sponsored by a San Francisco Women's Association to restore areas damaged by forest fires. Since that beginning in 1941 many groups and individuals have been added each year. In the beginning pine seedlings could be purchased for 1cent each and 680 seedlings would reseed an acre. A $68.00 donation would reseed 10 acres (6,800 new trees). Our Club voted to donate $68.00 to reseed 10 acres of forest.
The Club committed to providing complete Thanksgiving Dinners for needy families in the Upland area. During this meeting the plans were finalized to prepare and deliver complete dinners for these families. On Friday November 18th we met at Cable Airport to pack all the fixing's necessary for 12 families to have a complete dinner. The pictures below show our Club members filling bags of food to provide everything for these 12 families. This food was taken to Lion (Pastor) Glenn's church for distribution.
Plans were, also, made to deliver unwrapped toys for the Channel 7 Spark of love toy drive. The "Spark of Love", led by Garth Kemp of Channel 7, will be in the Mathis Brothers parking lot on Friday, December 2. Our time to be there will be determined. We will attempt to get other Lions Clubs in Zone A to join us and make a good showing of the Lions Clubs supporting this effort.
The Upland Christmas Parade is scheduled to be held on Saturday, December 3 from 11AM to 1PM. Lion Ken M. is on the Parade Committee and our Club has been asked to help with coordinating this event.

We have a member of our Club who enjoys tweaking the members of the Upland City Council, on occasion, and he has evidently succeeded in getting their attention. This was noted in the local newspaper as "In the first test of the new policy, Fillipi proposed that gadfly Hal Tanner's complaints be sent to the Advisory Committee for review." Congratulations Hal they have finally acknowledged you.
Leaving You With A Smile
Have a Good Month
