Upland Host Lions Monthly Bulletin - January, 2015

Programs  - January, 2015
January 5, 2015 - This was our Monthly Board Meeting. Minutes of this meeting were published on the Clubs blog and made available to all Club Members for their review and comment. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the Minutes as presented.

January 19, 2015 - Today's speaker was Ms. Lisa McKay from Casa Colina Hospital. Ms. McKay talked about the history of the hospital from its small beginnings to the 68 bed hospital that it is now and the 31 bed addition scheduled to open in August, 2015. Casa Colina provides individuals the opportunity to maximize their medical recovery and rehabilitation potential. Casa Colina is committed to providing the best care and surroundings to make recovery and rehabilitation happen. Casa Colina's vision is to maintain it's position at the forefront of post-acute continuum as a Center of Excellence in the provision of service to people who benefit from medical recovery and rehabilitation. Casa Colina has been very active in the "Wounded Warrior" program to rehabilitate our seriously wounded service people coming back from recent and on-going wars. In the 1990's funds were set aside for the Wounded Warrior program. At Casa Colina this program specializes on brain and spinal cord injuries. All services to the wounded warriors are free of charge to the individuals. Casa Colina's "Wounded Warrior Program" is funded through fund raising programs and donors. An example of their fund raising is the annual "Tribute To Courage" dinner. The last dinner hosted 800 people and raised substantial funds for Wounded Warriors. Lion Ken Myers mentioned to Ms. McKay that LCI has a Matching Grants program for the Wounded Warriors Program and suggested that Casa Colina should contact LCI for a matching grant. Ms. McKay stated that 90 wounded warriors have received help at Casa Colina and at this time all have progressed well enough to go home. The most well known Wounded Warrior graduate of Casa Colina is Sargent First Class Cory Remsburg who sustained multiple injuries from an IED while serving in Afghanistan. Seargent Remsburg was recently honored at the Presidents 2015 State of The Nation Address.

In addition to the program mentioned above Casa Colina provides care to more than 10,700 children and adults each year through medically supervised inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitation and community services. Casa Colina is operated as one of our Country's few remaining independent, not-for-profit, rehabilitation hospitals.

Other Committee Reports: No reports from other Committees

Old Business: Some time ago we had a request from Lion Scott Quinlan requesting help from District 4L-4 Clubs to assist financially with his training to use a guide dog. It has now been reported that he has found another source for getting the funding he needed for training with his guide dog.

New Business: It appears that the Club's Bell (the big one) was stolen from the storage hanger. Other items were taken but nothing else belonging to the Club. We still have the small bell we used for Atria Del Rey and will use it in our meetings.

The Club 50/50 raffle was for $1021.00 tonight. No one won the 50/50 so the entire $1,021.00 will be rolled back into the Administrative Account and the 50/50 will start over at $0.00 for the next meeting ( January 19, 2015).

The next District 4L-4 meeting will be held on January 24th at Khoury's Restaurant in Long Beach. Cost will be $22.00 per person.

On January 10th the Annual Melvin Jones Dinner will be held on the Queen Mary in Long Beach. A motion was made, seconded and approved for the Club to pay for attendance by our newest Melvin Jones recipients, Lions Joe and Arlene.

Since Atria Del Rey is no longer a branch Club it was suggested that President Ken B. talk to them and propose that our Club is still interested in working with them on projects but will no longer attend meetings there.

The annual Cable Air Show is Scheduled for the weekend of January 10th and 11th. Due to permit requirements Lion Michael has decided not to operate his breakfast/hamburger stand this year. Therefore, our Club will not be participating this year.

Lion Tina donated 18 inches of hair to be used for cancer victims. For those of you that do not know Tina's new married name is - Kristina Stewart Weaver.

The Club had two visitors at this meeting, Mr. Ralph Cavalo and Ken Hargrave. These gentlemen represented the Upland Veterans Monument Committee. Their committee is proposing a 5 sided granite monument, to be located between the Upland Public Library and Upland City Hall. The 5 sides will represent each of our Country's military organizations (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard). There is no Monument on the West Coast recognizing the sacrifices of our servicemen and women during our Country's wars. These gentlemen will be traveling across the Country promoting the funding of this monument. The monument will be 14 feet high and will weigh 2,400 pounds, its cost will be $400,000.00.

LAST, BUT MOST IMPORTANT, Lion Jim Pilling's Memorial Service will be held on January 17th at the home of his son. His son, Tim Pilling, lives at 11010 Aries Way, Mira Loma, CA. The service is to held at 11:30AM and lunch will be served. Any questions regarding the service please call 425-765-9614. Club members are urged to attend this memorial, Jim was a very long time member of Upland Host Lions.
