Upland Host Lions Monthly Bulletin - August, 2016

Programs - August, 2016

August 1, 2016 - This was our Monthly Board Meeting. Minutes of that Meeting were prepared and placed on the Club's blog for everyone to review and comment.

August 15, 2016 - At this meeting the Club was honored to have a group of Wounded Warriors speak to us about the therapeutic benefits they receive by participating in the Dive Warriors program. This program was started approximately six months ago by Mr. Brad Mirman who felt a deep need to do something for our wounded veterans who were coming home with serious disabilities and many of them were unable to cope with life and were committing suicide. Every day 22 veterans take their own lives because of the many debilitating experiences they have gone through in defending our Country and the lives of individuals in their tours overseas. Their injuries range from PTSD, traumatic brain injury, spinal injuries and loss of limbs. They are our quiet warriors, struggling in silence against pain, loneliness and a feeling they no longer belong in our society.

Dive warriors offers these veterans an environment of personal growth, camaraderie and a social setting where they can interact with other disabled veterans with similar issues. Through scuba diving, they overcome challenges and get relief from the stress and pain they suffer daily.

Dive Warriors gets no support from the government and operates solely from donations and generous support from people. All of their staff members and scuba professionals are volunteers. There is absolutely no cost to the veterans. Dive Warriors Mission is to build confidence and self esteem in veterans with disabilities through scuba diving. To date they have graduated 18 certified scuba divers (in just 6 months of operation). No one is accepted in this program unless they are wounded/handicapped veterans.

There are 165,000 disabled veterans in the Inland Empire.

In conjunction with the Fishbake, three UHL Club members (Lions Ken M., Terri and Keith) attended a multi-Chamber of Commerce Mixer at the LA Fairgrounds to help promote our annual Fishbake. There were many people there from the local communities and all were very receptive to the Flyers we handed out and expressed an interest in our fund raiser.

Treasurer's Report: Since there was no Board Meeting in July due to the 4th of July Holiday Treasurer Ken B. presented the following financial information, which included June, 2016, for his Report.

Activity Acct.:  June 6, 2016 - $11,587.45    August 1, 2016 - $5959.49

Committee Reports:
Most discussion at this meeting was regarding this years 62nd Annual Fish, Steak and Corn Feed. Status of preparations for this August 5th fund raiser was in the spotlight tonight. All food and other essentials for this annual fund raiser had been procured. The setup crew were asked to be at our Cable Airport storage hanger by 5 PM on Thursday, August 4th. On August 5th, all volunteers for site setup up were asked to be at Upland Memorial Park from 8:30 AM to 2 PM to setup equipment and prepare the kitchen and tables. All other volunteers were asked to be at the Park by 4 PM for final preparation and start serving.

Old Business:
Members were asked to pay their dues (only 6 have paid). Please pay your dues if you have not. The due date for both LCI and the District is near.

Our Membership Committee is making every effort to get Club members energized to bring new members into the Club. All members were asked by Lions Ken M. and Terri bring one guest to our August 15th, meeting with hopes of recruiting some new members from those guests. As a bribe, Lion Ken M. said everyone bringing a guest would get a gift - GO KEN.

New Business:
Our Club has been a long time donor to Guide Dogs of the Desert. A motion was made to change this donation to Guide Dogs For The Blind. This motion is based on the fact that Guide Dogs Of The Desert now has a wait time for new requests of 5 years. Lion Scott Quinlan, President of the Huntington Beach Host Lions applied for a guide dog from Guide Dogs Of The Desert and was told he would have to wait 5 years. He went to Guide Dogs For The Blind and received his guide dog in 6 months. This motion was seconded and approved.

Our Club has contributed to the GAP (God Always Provides) food pantry for the needy. We were recently told they are no longer in business, they lost the warehouse they operated from and decided to close down.  A motion was made, seconded and approved to move this donation from the GAP to the Life Point Church Soul Food Pantry.

It was suggested that the Club take on, as an ongoing project, participation as volunteers in the Life Point Church monthly breakfast for the area homeless people. This breakfast is prepared and served on the 4th Sunday of each month.

At this meeting we, also, talked about a Club get together for a Pot Luck in the Park, participation in the October Opportunity Drawing and the Feed The Children Program.

On September 10th our Club will participate, with three other Club's, on a Lions Friends In Sight Vision Clinic to be held at the Sultana Academy in Ontario.
