Programs - January, 2015
January 5, 2015 - This was our Monthly Board Meeting. Minutes of this meeting were published on the Clubs blog and made available to all Club Members for their review and comment. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the Minutes as presented. January 19, 2015 - Today's speaker was Ms. Lisa McKay from Casa Colina Hospital. Ms. McKay talked about the history of the hospital from its small beginnings to the 68 bed hospital that it is now and the 31 bed addition scheduled to open in August, 2015. Casa Colina provides individuals the opportunity to maximize their medical recovery and rehabilitation potential. Casa Colina is committed to providing the best care and surroundings to make recovery and rehabilitation happen. Casa Colina's vision is to maintain it's position at the forefront of post-acute continuum as a Center of Excellence in the provision of service to people who benefit from medical recovery and rehabilitation. Casa Colina has been very active in the "Wounded Warrior" program to rehabilitate our seriously wounded service people coming back from recent and on-going wars. In the 1990's funds were set aside for the Wounded Warrior program. At Casa Colina this program specializes on brain and spinal cord injuries. All services to the wounded warriors are free of charge to the individuals. Casa Colina's "Wounded Warrior Program" is funded through fund raising programs and donors. An example of their fund raising is the annual "Tribute To Courage" dinner. The last dinner hosted 800 people and raised substantial funds for Wounded Warriors. Lion Ken Myers mentioned to Ms. McKay that LCI has a Matching Grants program for the Wounded Warriors Program and suggested that Casa Colina should contact LCI for a matching grant. Ms. McKay stated that 90 wounded warriors have received help at Casa Colina and at this time all have progressed well enough to go home. The most well known Wounded Warrior graduate of Casa Colina is Sargent First Class Cory Remsburg who sustained multiple injuries from an IED while serving in Afghanistan. Seargent Remsburg was recently honored at the Presidents 2015 State of The Nation Address.
In addition to the program mentioned above Casa Colina provides care to more than 10,700 children and adults each year through medically supervised inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitation and community services. Casa Colina is operated as one of our Country's few remaining independent, not-for-profit, rehabilitation hospitals.

Of significance this month is the request we received from two members of the Pomona Host Lions to become Associate Members of our Club. Lions Richard and Beverly Sugerman are now Associate Members of Upland Host Lions and we pleased to welcome them into our Club.
As everyone is aware we recently said a sad goodbye to one of our long time members, Lion Ray Larson passed away on January 13th. At this meeting the Club voted to donate $150.00 to the Salvation Army in his name.
We were reminded that our Club's Student Speaker Contest is scheduled for February 16th (the date of our scheduled 2nd meeting in February). The contest will be held in the building we normally use, at the entrance to the airport, at 6:00PM.
Our next fund raiser will be a Lions Comedy Night at 6:00PM on Saturday, March 21st. More information will be forthcoming.
