Upland Host Lions Monthly Bulletin - August, 2015

Programs - August, 2015
August 3, 2015 - This was our Monthly Board Meeting. Minutes of that meeting were published on the Club's blog and made available to all Club Members for their review and comment. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the Minutes as presented.

August 17, 2015 - Lion Sang was the Club's Program Chairperson for this meeting and he had arranged for Upland Mayor Ray Musser to talk to us today.

Mayor Ray told us how he came to be in California. He and his wife were originally from the Pennsylvania Amish country. They went to high school together and sang with the high school musical groups. When he was still in high school Ray was asked to sing with a group at a local college. He said he was an Alto but the college needed a Tenor and he was told he could become a tenor if he would sing for them - which he did. Ray went into the service after high school and sang in musical groups when he was in the service. He was in California and the music professor from Upland College heard him sing asked him to come to Upland College, on a scholarship, and he and his high school sweetheart (now wife) decided to come to Upland and have been here ever since.

During the 1980's he met Ronald Reagan and after talking to him Ray became interested in politics. Since that time he has been involved in our community politics and is now the Mayor. He spoke briefly about the current status of Upland. He stated that Upland is a City that is real-estate rich but cash poor. He said the City owns the water company and many people and organizations have tried to get the City to sell the Water Company but so far the City has resisted. Ray said the City will have all its property paid for this year. He spoke highly of the new Deputy City Manager and stated the City knows financially where they are going. Building in the Colonies is still growing and there is a new restaurant planned to be developed soon in the area east of the ARCO service station and Ford of Upland will, also, soon relocate to the area north of the 210 Freeway. We enjoyed the Mayors talk/discussion very much as we have every time he has been a speaker at Upland Host Lions.

May 4, 2015 - This was our monthly Board Meeting. Minutes of that meeting were published on the Club's blog and made available to all Club Members for their review and comment. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the Minutes as presented.

May 18, 2015 - Todays program chairman was Lion Jim Thomas. Our speaker was Ms. Janet Rice from the Upland Recreation Department. She spoke to us about the current homeless situation in the local area. Ms. Rice is on a committee to provide assistance to these homeless people. She stated that there are two types of homeless they deal with. The first are the chronic homeless, who have no home or stability and the second are what the Government term "McKinney-Venta" homeless. The second group generally live in their cars and have jobs. Ms. Rice's committee do "point in time counts" where they find and count the homeless. They do these counts early in the morning to get the homeless where they normally gather. The last count was held on October 7, 2014 and included Memorial Park and other sites. That count resulted in 81 homeless accounted for in the area. There are 6 providers in the area who provide shelter for families with kids. Ms. Rice is seeking help with their annual counts and collecting items such as hygiene articles and any thing else the homeless may use. The Upland Monument Committee is collecting items to donate, such as hygiene, T-shirts, water, granola bars, wash cloths and etc.

The total cost of this memorial will be $400,000, all to raised by donations. After Ralph's presentation our Club decided to hold a fund raiser specifically to raise funds for this monument. We held a Comedy Night and raised funds for this donation. At our meeting tonight the Club presented a check for $1,000 to Ralph for use in developing this monument.

On Saturday, April 18th a District Meeting was held in Pomona and 6 of our members attended. This was an excellent meeting and many topics were discussed. Most vital to our Club and, it seems, many others, was a presentation titled "taxation and Lions Clubs". It seems that many Clubs have run a-foul of the taxation requirements effecting all U.S. Lions Clubs. These requirements are covered by both Federal and State tax laws and can have serious impacts upon the Clubs. PDG Howard Hudson from A3 was our speaker and he did a great job covering the various Federal and State taxation requirements. Everything he covered was pertinent to our Club (to many items to cover in this report). several items he emphasized specifically impact us:
  1. Fish Bake - tax only on ticket sales not on sponsor donation.
  2. Raffles must be registered with the Attorney General.
  3.  Clubs should have a bond on the Treasurer.
  4. The Club's Standing Rules should include tax requirements.
  5. If  our Club is Incorporated we must file Bi-annually with the Secretary Of State.
This month our used eye glass collector (Lion Jim T.) collected 270 prescription eye glasses for donation to the District.
Visitations:
No visitation were made in April, 2015

Next Meeting:
Our next meeting will be on May 4th at 6:30 PM at maniac Mike's Café at cable Airport.
