Upland Host Lions Monthly Bulletin - April 18, 2016

Programs - April, 2016:
April 4, 2016 - Monthly Board Meeting. Minutes of this meeting were prepared and placed on the Club's blog for everyone to review and comment.

April 18, 2016 - Our program tonight was a Service Project. One of our members recently met the Director of Mariposa Community Services (a branch of New Hope - Homeless Outreach & Services) and they discussed the need for hygiene items for the homeless. Mariposa Community Services provides Clothing, Hygiene Items, Blankets and other survival needs.  This Community Service was brought back and discussed at the Club and we decided to participate by preparing hygiene bags for them. Club members began collecting items for the bags. Over a period of several weeks we collected combs, socks, toothbrushes, lip balm, toothpaste, wash cloths, and many other items for the bags. Tonight all Club members assembled bags of these items for the donation. At the end of the evening the Club had assembled 60 bags to donate to Mariposa Community Services. These bags will be distributed to the needy and homeless people in our area.

Other Items Worthy Of Mention:
On April 2nd and 3rd, 2016 a Health Fair was held at the Anaheim Convention Center. Unfortunately prior to those dates the original sponsor backed out. District Governor Ken M. was asked if Lions would assume sponsorship and after some thought and discussion with Clubs in the District it was agreed that Lions would sponsor this Health Fair. We used the District 4-L4 Sight and Hearing Van and with the help of several Clubs and LEOs in the District we had a very successful Health Fair. During the Fair we conducted 160 eye exams and provided new glasses for 130 people. During this Fair many other needs were taken care of such as dental exams, physical exams of all sorts and etc. were taken care of during the two day period. Over 1,000 people were screened by all the different medical services available.

Treasurers Report: Treasurer Ken B. presented the following information for his report
Admin. Acct.:  March 7, 2016  -- $  3,351.26   April 4, 2016 $  3739.70
Activity Acct.: March 7, 2016 --  $13,167.20   April 4, 2016 $12,768.13

Other Committee Reports:
Lion Keith and Governor Ken M. talked briefly about fundraisers. It was suggested that we have another Comedy Night. Governor Ken M. said he would talk to the lady who sets up the Comedy Nights and try to arrange a night and location for it. Lion Keith referred to a flyer from the Harbor Mesa Lions promoting their TACO FIESTA FUND RAISER. This fund raiser looks like the type we could do with very little effort from the Club members. Many restaurants have fund raising programs which we could use with little physical effort from our members. It would just mean finding a location that would work with us and our Club members working hard to promote the Fund Raiser. We would need to get out and promote it through all the Clubs in District 4-L4, all our friends and out in the community.

For all of our fund raisers, whatever the fundraiser, our Club Members should consider it a personal commitment and challenge to promote and support the effort. Our commitment to Service depends on the funds we can raise to support community charitable organizations and our personal involvement in whatever organization we can help..

Old Business:
The Region Student Speaker Contest was held on March 29th and the speaker from the Cucamonga Host Lions Club won. Congratulations Cucamonga Host.

On April 2nd and 3rd Upland Host Lions sponsored a Health Fair at the Anaheim Convention Center. We had the District Sight and Hearing Van at the Health Fair and it was manned by Lions from several Clubs. From our Club Lions Ken M., Keith and Jim K. were there to give eye exams. During the two day affair we provided exams for 160 people and 131 of those people received new glasses.

Another Health Fair is scheduled for early December, 2016 and we hope to have Club volunteers to participate in that Health Fair.

The Club is participating in an effort to put together hygiene bags for Upland's needy citizens. A list of items to be donated was handed out to all Club members and you are asked to bring what you can to our April 18th meeting so that we may put the hygiene bags together.

New Business:
On Saturday, April 16th, the last District 4-L4 meeting for Governor Ken M's. year in office is scheduled. We have 6 Club members who indicated they would be at this meeting and it is important that we attend to honor our Club Member and District Governor Lion Ken Myers.

On May 21st the Cooper Museum is holding their annual Car Show. We need volunteers to participate in this community affair.

Our Club Group Picture and the remaining individual pictures will be taken at our May 2nd Club Meeting. Please plan to be there.

Voting for the Club's 2016/2017 Officers will take place at the May 2nd meeting. Please be there to vote for our new Officers.
