December 5, 2016 - This was the Clubs Holiday Party. We had a pot luck dinner and played several games where everyone won a Christmas Ornament and I won a jar containing 107 peanuts.

December 19, 2016 - This will be the Club's Monthly Board Meeting for December, 2016. The Board meeting and General meeting dates were switched, this month, to facilitate the Club's Holiday Party.

On December 10th Upland Host Lions, along with members of several other Clubs, provided support to the success of the City of Upland Christmas Parade. The highlight of the Parade was to see our District Governor, Bob Susaeta, representing the Lions, riding in the Parade.

A visit is planned for December 15th at the Pomona Lions Club.

Upland Host Lions Monthly Bulletin - November. 2016

Programs - November, 2016:

November 7, 2016 - This Meeting was the Club's Monthly Board Meeting. The Board Meeting Minutes were placed on the Club's blog for everyone to review and comment. A motion was made during the November 21st meeting to accept the Board Meeting Minutes as presented.

November 21, 2016 - Unfortunately we did not have a program for this meeting. Committed programs do, unfortunately get cancelled. But, fortunately, we had many other things to discuss. In our last meeting we had a proposal to share our mailbox eyeglass collection point with the Ontario Host Lions. Ontario Host offered to have the mail box powder coated and new decals put on it. Lion Joey stated that he had a powder coating company do work for him and he could see what they would charge us to powder coat the mailbox. Many members objected to sharing the mail box and favored Joey's getting information to have it done by our Club. It was decided to wait for Lions Joey's information before making the final decision.

During our discussion of Club membership Lion Ken Myers stated he had been approached by a teacher from one of our local schools and they discussed starting a LEOs Club for their 7th and 8th graders. The Club is very interested in starting a LEO Club and after much discussion it was decided we would pursue getting it started. Our newest Lion, Lion Joey  had been a LEO and volunteered  to take the lead in making this happen.

Program Assignments For December, 2016:

December 5, 2016 - This would normally be the Club's Monthly Board Meeting but This month it is scheduled to be the Club's annual Holiday Party. It is to be held at Maniac Mike's Café and will be a pot luck dinner. It will start at our regular time 6:30 PM. Everyone is asked to bring a Christmas ornament for exchange.

December 19, 2016 - This meeting will be our regular Monthly Board Meeting.

Other Items Worthy Of Mention:

On October 28th (to late for last months Bulletin) the Club participated in the Upland Interfaith Council of Churches annual prayer breakfast. Upland Host Lions member Lion Jim Thomas was the breakfasts Master of Ceremonies. In attendance for the Club were Lions (President) Jim K., Ken Bell, Madeleine, Jim T., Sang, Keith, and Madeleine's son Jim.

The Upland Host Lions will, once again, participate with the Salvation Army and be Bell Ringers for their Christmas collection. The exact date has not yet been set but it will be on either December 2nd or December 9th. Lion Madeleine will notify everyone of the final date and arrange for manning times.

The Anaheim Convention Center Health Fair is scheduled to be held December 3rd and 4th, 2016. IPDG Lion Ken Myers is organizing the Lions Clubs involvement and Upland Host Lions will be the Lions sponsors of this event. Names were taken of members who volunteered for this event and other Clubs will be asked to participate.

A donation of $200 was made to the Life Point Church to be used for food for complete Thanksgiving Dinners for needy people in the Upland/Ontario area. The Church will provide 313 complete meals for area needy families.

Upland Host Lions has agreed to participate with the City of Upland to insure the success of the Upland Christmas Parade scheduled for December 10th. Our role will be to help in various capacities such as traffic direction, hospitality suite hosts, parade organization and other spots as needed.

Visitations:

A visitation is scheduled to the Pomona Host Lions Club on December 15th.

Next Meeting:

The Club's next meeting will be on December 5th at Maniac Mike's Café. This will be the Club's Annual Holiday Party and will be  a pot luck affair. Most Lion signed up for their donation to the meal at our November 21st meeting. For those unable to sign-up at the meeting please feel free to contact Lions Madeleine, Arlene or Sandy to notify them of your contribution.

Upland Host Lions Monthly Bulletin - October, 2016

Programs - October, 2016:

October 3, 2016 - This Meeting was the Club's October, 2016 Monthly Board Meeting. Unfortunately, your Writer/Editor/Publisher was unable to attend that meeting and could not produce the Minutes of the meeting.

October 17, 2016 - This meeting was the Upland Host Lions opportunity to Host District 4-L4, 2016/2017 Governor Bob Susaeta and members of his Cabinet and have them share their vision for the Districts 2016/2017 Lion Year. Governor Susaeta opened by stating his vision for the District "Joining Hands In Service". We can attain this vision by all the Clubs in the District working together. The Governor went on to say there are 46,000 Clubs in 210 country's worldwide with 1.4 million members. There are Lions Clubs in many places not normally thought of as locations for Lions Clubs. As an example, Clubs are located in the Vatican City, China and Lions are the only service organization to have a seat at the UN. LCI has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In California there are 731 Lions Clubs with 20,365 members. During the past year District 4-L4 has grown from 1,231 members to 1,336. 

Governor Susaeta also talked to us about the LCIF which was founded in 1968. LCIF has distributed $950,000,000 in funds to Matching Grants and Lions Charities. One of its prime causes has been the elimination of River Blindness. They have been successful in eliminating River Blindness in South America and are now working to eliminate it in Africa. Close to home LCIF funded three new vision cameras for District 4-L4 and continues to fund the Friends In Sight activities.

1st VDG Judy Barr spoke to us about the Centennial Slogan "Where There's A Need There's A Lion", She spoke about Centennial Projects and Legacy Projects and encouraged our Club to become involved in them. Examples of Legacy Projects are those which provide continued Lion Visibility such as Planting a tree or placing a Park Bench, both with an identifying plaque as a Lions Project. 1st VDG Judy spoke about new members and the need to set a goal for at least a 10% net increase in membership by the end of the year.  Judy told us that women now make up 44% of the District 4 -L4 membership.

2nd VDG Randy McMillan spoke to us about the Certified Guiding Lion training course which is scheduled for October 22nd at the Garden Grove Clubhouse. He encouraged our attendance and stressed the benefits of this training. 2nd VDG Randy spoke about the 2017 Rose Float. The Float is to be the largest yet made by   Lions. It will be 55 feet long and will cost $155,000. To help cover the cost of the Float, Lions items such as Shirts, T-Shirts, Jackets, etc. are for sale and a Stained Glass Window will be raffled off. Also, for a monetary donation of $7,500 there are seats available on the Lions Rose Float this year. There are two seats still available.

Most important of our Other Items was the installation of our newest member, Lion Joey Amaro. District Governor Susaeta preformed the installation and the Club welcomed Lion Joey into the group. Lion Joey was, previously, a LEO for a number of years and is a very welcome new member of our Club. We hope that with Joey's membership we can start a trend towards new, younger members. As with a lot of Clubs we are aging and need new blood to reinvigorate the Club.

On Saturday October 15th the "Rotors,  Warbirds and Wheels Fest" was held at Cable Airport and Upland Host Lions had an information Booth at the affair. Lions (President) Jim K., Ken M. and Jim T. manned the booth for the day. A number of the attendees had questions regarding Lions. This was a good day to give our Club exposure.

At the Rotors, Warbirds and Wheels Fest - Cable Airport

Foothill Region Chairperson, Andy Megaw recently made Lions Club Banners for each of the Foothill Region Clubs. He presented these Banners to each of the Clubs at the recent Region Meeting. Lion (PDG) Ken M. received the Banner for our Club. This Banner will be used whenever the Club has a public outing. Thank You Andy.

Last but, as they say, not least are a few club items:

• On October 27th the Upland Annual Interfaith Prayer Breakfast will be held at 7:00AM at the Upland Fire Department. A motion was made and seconded for the Club to pay for a table (8 seats) at the breakfast.
• On October 31st the Upland Parks & Recreation Department will hold their annual Scary Affair. As in Past years Upland Host Lions will provide some of the candy to be handed out to the kids.
• On November 11th Upland will host their annual Veterans Day Parade. Upland Host Lions has volunteered to help.
• Upland Host Lions has been asked to participate in the Upland Christmas Parade on December 11th. More details will be forthcoming.

September (August 29,) 2016 - Due to the Labor day Holiday on September 5th The Club voted to hold the September, 2016 Monthly Board Meeting on August 29th. The Minutes of that Board Meeting were placed on the Club's blog for everyone to review and comment.

September 19, 2016 - Our program planned for today did not materialize, therefore, we discussed other items of interest to the Club. We had several visitors at our meeting today. We were honored to have 8 visitors from the Ontario/Upland Lions Club.  They visited us today to invite us to their Outback Fund Raiser scheduled for November 14th. Kyle Schneider, Vice President of "Dive Warriors", was an invited guest to receive our Club's donation to the Dive Warriors organization.

President Jim K. discussed an article he had read in "Upland Today". It was an article by and for the Upland Rotary Club. It was very well written and projected a great image to the City of Upland for their Rotary Club. President Jim observed that this was great P.R. for Rotary and said he would look into placing such an article in "Upland Today" for Upland Host Lions and said he would prepare a draft for the Club's agreement.

The Club has received notices from LCI of 2 individuals showing interest in membership in  our Club. After several attempts to contact both potential members no response has been received.

CLIS VISION SCREENING AT SULTANA SCIENCE and SPORTS ACADEMY



On September 10th CLIS, with the cooperation of four local Lions Clubs (Ontario/Upland Lions, Ontario Host Lions, Upland Host Lions and Cucamonga District Host Lions) conducted vision screening at the Sultana Science and Sports Academy in Ontario. Cucamonga District Host Lions organized this effort. From 8:00AM to 2:00PM 374 eye exams were provided resulting in fitting 271 pairs of glasses. 98 of these recipients were 1st timers for glasses and 11 were diagnosed with vision diseases they were not aware they had. Many children were among the 374 individuals who were tested.  The volunteers for this vision screening were fantastic. We had volunteers from 17 District 4-L4 Clubs.

DIVE WARRIORS - On August 15, 2016 a veterans help group called "Dive Warriors" visited our Club and told us of their mission to help severely wounded veterans overcome the trauma of their wounds in service to our Country. This visit was recorded in the August, 2016 Monthly Bulletin. The Dive Warriors organization is totally funded by donations and help from individuals. Their staff is totally unpaid volunteer. At the Club's September Board Meeting a motion was made that our Club donate to this very worthy group. We had a motion, seconded and approved to donate $200 to the Dive Warriors. This was a very small donation in return for the losses these veterans have suffered for our ongoing safety. The Vice President (volunteer) of Dive Warriors was invited to this meeting and presented with our donation and our expression of appreciation for their work.

A Foothill Region Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 27th at the Lions West Building on Base Line Road. All members are urged to attend and the cost is $18/person.

Upland Host Lions Monthly Board Meeting - September, 2016

Secretary's Report: The Secretary's Board Meeting Report for August, 2016 Was placed on the Club's blog for all Club members to review and comment.

Treasurer's Report: Treasurer Ken B. presented the following financial information for August and September, 2016:
Admin Acct.:     August 1, 2016 - $  4,413.57   September (August 29), 2016 - $  3989.17
Activity Acct.:   August 1, 2016 - $  5,959.49   September (August 29), 2016 - $13,621.46

Treasurer Ken, also, reported the net income from our Club's annual Fishbake was $5,567.97 and the Club LCI dues in the amount of $387.00 were paid.

Committee Reports: Fishbake/Steak Fry. The Fishbake/Steak Fry was a moderate success this year. Ticket sales and sponsorships were both down from previous years. This year our gross income was $8,468.00, expenses were $2,900.03 making our net income from this fund raiser $5,567.97. It takes approximately 30 people to handle our Fishbake and with our small (aged) Club we had a lot of outside help to pull this off. We are very grateful to the other Clubs, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Latter Day Saints and all other volunteers for their support in making this fund raiser the success it was.

Old Business: On September 10th there is a four Club (Cucamonga Host, Ontario/Upland, Chino Valley and Upland Host) Vision Screening scheduled at the Sultana Sports and Science Academy in Ontario. Five members of our Club have volunteered to work at this screening.

The annual Governors Fund Raiser is Scheduled to be held on September 10th at Pete's Ponderosa and Club members were urged to attend

New Business: Our new business was an opportunity to talk about the Fishbake and bring up suggestions for next year, with overall improvement and suggestions for alternate or other fund raisers. An important part of this discussion was Club membership. We have an aging Club and it is getting very stressful for our older members to do the physical work associated with the Fishbake. We, fortunately, have had a lot of volunteers to help us but that need is growing every year and is straining relationships within the Club. As mentioned above we discussed the need for new members and our membership committee is working on that but we all need to be involved. We talked about improvements we could make in the overall Fishbake process primarily in our planning and cost estimating and general overall operation. We discussed relocating the Fishbake to a more desirable location, or even replacing it with another type fund raiser or multiple smaller activities. All of these discussion items need further investigation and Club participation.

Lion Tina has been working on our joint Calendar fund raiser, with other Clubs, and she now has the Calendars for distribution and suggested that each Club member take 10 Calendars to sell. The cost of any Calendars we don't sell will have to be covered by the Club.

Visitations: No Visitations are scheduled for September, 2016.

Requests For Donations: A motion was made to make a $200 donation to "Dive Warriors". Dive Warriors made a presentation to our Club On August 15th. It is a wounded veterans organization designed to ease the pain of war and the debilitating wounds (mental and physical) that our country's service men suffer. The organization is funded solely by contributions by friends and donations from service organizations like ours. The motion was seconded and approved by the Club membership.

The Club had received an e-mail from the Cucamonga Host Lions Club asking us to consider participating in the cost resulting from the Four Club Vision Screening scheduled to be held on September 10th in Ontario. The Vision Screening is to be held at the Sultana Sports & Science Academy and the school is charging the four Clubs $641 for its use. This charge was a surprise to the coordinating Club (CHL) and they said they would take care of it, but if any of the participating Clubs could share in the cost it would amount to $161.20 for each Club. A motion was made to participate in this $161.20 cost and a motion was made, seconded and approved for this donation.

Donations Made: Although donations were approved, none were made this month.

Next Meeting: The Club's next meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 19, 2016, 6:30 PM at maniac Mike's Café. The Program Chairperson for the next meeting is Lion Arlene.

Upland Host Lions Monthly Bulletin - August, 2016

Programs - August, 2016

August 1, 2016 - This was our Monthly Board Meeting. Minutes of that Meeting were prepared and placed on the Club's blog for everyone to review and comment.

August 15, 2016 - At this meeting the Club was honored to have a group of Wounded Warriors speak to us about the therapeutic benefits they receive by participating in the Dive Warriors program. This program was started approximately six months ago by Mr. Brad Mirman who felt a deep need to do something for our wounded veterans who were coming home with serious disabilities and many of them were unable to cope with life and were committing suicide. Every day 22 veterans take their own lives because of the many debilitating experiences they have gone through in defending our Country and the lives of individuals in their tours overseas. Their injuries range from PTSD, traumatic brain injury, spinal injuries and loss of limbs. They are our quiet warriors, struggling in silence against pain, loneliness and a feeling they no longer belong in our society.

Dive warriors offers these veterans an environment of personal growth, camaraderie and a social setting where they can interact with other disabled veterans with similar issues. Through scuba diving, they overcome challenges and get relief from the stress and pain they suffer daily.

Dive Warriors gets no support from the government and operates solely from donations and generous support from people. All of their staff members and scuba professionals are volunteers. There is absolutely no cost to the veterans. Dive Warriors Mission is to build confidence and self esteem in veterans with disabilities through scuba diving. To date they have graduated 18 certified scuba divers (in just 6 months of operation). No one is accepted in this program unless they are wounded/handicapped veterans.

There are 165,000 disabled veterans in the Inland Empire.

On August 5, 2016 Upland Host Lions hosted their 62nd Annual Fishbake / Steak Fry. We thank all our sponsors and guests and the District 4-L4 Clubs, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and others who supported us and  helped with the many activities required to make this fund raiser successful. We served Salmon, Bacon wrapped Filet Minion Unlimited Corn and more. The Club received may compliments, from our guests, regarding the food. The Fishbake is a long standing tradition of Upland Host Lions and we expect to have many more. The Club's net income from this fund raiser was $4,926.

In conjunction with the Fishbake, three UHL Club members (Lions Ken M., Terri and Keith) attended a multi-Chamber of Commerce Mixer at the LA Fairgrounds to help promote our annual Fishbake. There were many people there from the local communities and all were very receptive to the Flyers we handed out and expressed an interest in our fund raiser.

Next Meeting:

Since our next meeting would normally be scheduled on September 5th, which is a holiday, it has been rescheduled to August 29th. As normal the meeting will be held at Maniac Mike's Café, at Cable Airport. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM and will be our monthly Board Meeting for September, 2016.
