Upland Host Lions Monthly Bulletin - April, 2015

Programs - April, 2015:
April 6, 2015 - This was our Monthly Board Meeting. Minutes of that Meeting were published on the Club's blog and made available to all Club Members for their review and comment. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the Minutes as presented.

April 20, 2015 - Lion Pete Badame, candidate for 2nd Vice District Governor, was our speaker today. Pete became a Lion in 1992 in the La Habra Host Lions Club and since that time he has served as a Club officer in several positions. In addition to Pete's Club activities he has served in 11 different Cabinet positions at the District level. Pete has proven his devotion to Lions with his very active participation in Club level and District affairs. In addition to all the Lions activity Lion Pete found time to be active in his community activity. Pete is a Melvin Jones Fellow and a Harry J. Aslam Fellow. Lion Pete has completed the Guiding Lion Training and is a graduate of the MD-4 Leadership Forum and the MD-4 Leadership Institute. He served as both a Zone and Region Chairman and his Club Honored him with a Lifetime Membership. Well Done Pete.

Other Items Worthy of Mention:
Earlier this Year Ralph Cavalo, Project Manager for the Upland Veterans Memorial, presented the plans for the Memorial to the Club. The Memorial will consist of a 5 sided Obelisk (one side for each branch of the armed services) and a Granit Memorial Wall. The total cost of this memorial will be $400,000, all to raised by donations. After Ralph's presentation our Club decided to hold a fund raiser specifically to raise funds for this monument. We held a Comedy Night and raised funds for this donation. At our meeting tonight the Club presented a check for $1,000 to Ralph for use in developing this monument.

To Facilitate the Club's Comedy Night the LifePoint Church, in Rancho Cucamonga, donated the use of their facilities as the venue for this fund raiser. In response to the Church's kind offer of their facilities we donated $300 to the Church.

On Sunday, April 19th Cub Scout Pack 614 held their annual Pine Wood Derby race. The Cub Pack asked our Club to act as judges for the cars. There were 28 cars in the competition and Lions Ken M. and Keith had a difficult time picking the three best as winners ( they were all winners). Many awards were presented and the Cub Scouts had a wonderful time.

On Saturday, April 18th a District Meeting was held in Pomona and 6 of our members attended. This was an excellent meeting and many topics were discussed. Most vital to our Club and, it seems, many others, was a presentation titled "taxation and Lions Clubs". It seems that many Clubs have run a-foul of the taxation requirements effecting all U.S. Lions Clubs. These requirements are covered by both Federal and State tax laws and can have serious impacts upon the Clubs. PDG Howard Hudson from A3 was our speaker and he did a great job covering the various Federal and State taxation requirements. Everything he covered was pertinent to our Club (to many items to cover in this report). several items he emphasized specifically impact us:
  1. Fish Bake - tax only on ticket sales not on sponsor donation.
  2. Raffles must be registered with the Attorney General.
  3.  Clubs should have a bond on the Treasurer.
  4. The Club's Standing Rules should include tax requirements.
  5. If  our Club is Incorporated we must file Bi-annually with the Secretary Of State.
This month our used eye glass collector (Lion Jim T.) collected 270 prescription eye glasses for donation to the District.
